Q 1. Who should be moving to a Care Home and what is the right time to be in one?
Answer: Any one at any time and at any age. Even if you are fully independent and working, physically and intellectually sound, retired, single or have a partner, male or female.
Care home is not just for the seniors, this facility is perfect and open to all.
Q 2. When is the right time to start thinking about moving into a Care Home?
Answer: There is no right fixed number, fixed age or answer to this question. Right time for someone may be at age 50 and or for other the age of 60 or 70 may be the time to move in. Generally speaking, if one has started feeling uncomfortable in carrying out their ADLs, (Activities of Daily Living) it is about late to be thing of moving to a care home.
Q 3. What is meant by ADLs?
Answer: Activities of Daily Living are those activities that are common and important part of our daily life. These activities refer to daily self-care activities within ones place of residence, in outdoor environments, or both.
Basic ADLs consist of self-care tasks, including:
• Personal hygiene and grooming
• Dressing and undressing
• Feeding
• Functional transfers
• Voluntarily controlling urinary and fecal discharge
• Ambulation
Q 4. What are Instrumental ADLs?
Answers: Instrumental Activities of Daily Living are more basic functions that are routinely used by people of all age to carry out our daily functions. I ADLs can be listed as under:
• Housework
• Meal Preparation
• Taking medications
• Managing money
• Shopping for groceries or clothing
• Telephone use
• Using technology as much found to be useful and comfortable by some one
Q 5. I think I have not all but just one of the concerns that are listed above. (Or even if one has none from the list so far) What should be my course of action?
Answer: Just a matter of personal choice and rational thinking. If you think ‘I can take care of myself, I don’t need such a facility’, even then you may be just the right one who should be thinking to move in.
It is not about being dependent or a burden on someone and it is not about asking for assistance on daily basis. It is a matter of living at your own pace, and in company.
Q 6. How would living in a care home help me? I am able to carry out my full activities on daily bases and I think I am self-sufficient and able?
Answer: Here lies a point. Everybody has their own life and lifestyle. As age advances we all become fragile and dependent. Age at which someone would need assistance varies with person to person. When dependence is Inevitable, it helps to have a little help but when independent a little help may be more enjoyable and would take you far with ease.
In other words, living in a good care home would be like living a care free life while doing what you really do and the way you do. It is like moving to a small community having your own personal space and a personal assistant all the time - Round The Clock. Help is always around you - Use it if you need.
